Erfurt Coberg Mainz

Day 7

We spent hours on the bus getting from Erfurt to Mainz with a stop at the Coberg Castle in the middle.

We are riding on a very comfortable coach bus. Each day we move up or back two seats depending where we were the day before.  By the end of trip we should be near the front.  Sarah is sitting next to Ardie, the lady in the red jacket.  She is from Canada but graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.  Denise is right behind Ardie and is sitting with Kerrolyne from Canada.

We drove through tunnels under hills of the Thuringer forest.

The exterior of Coburg Castle.  We were not allowed to take any interior photos.

Martin Luther spent five months at Coburg Castle during the Augsburg Diet.

The moat surrounding the Coburg Castle.

We are in the province of Bavaria and enjoyed seeing the flag waving.

One sign we have looked for is the WC.  Often we have had to pay .5 Euro to use the facility.

One of the courtyards at Coburg Castle.

Near Wurtzburg.  Werner, our tour director, grew up in the valley.  He now lives in Hamburg.  Notice all the vineyards on the hillside - dry white wine.

Werner, our tour director, really wanted to stop just outside Wurtzburg to eat but the rest area was closed so we went to the next exit and ate at Burger King.

We arrived at Mainz and took a short walk. We ended up at the cathedral.  An evening service was in progress and a dozen or so French horns provided the music.  The echoes were fascinating.

Tomorrow we will visit the Gutenberg Museum.

We had another fabulous dinner with Dorothy and Jane from Indiana, John and Julie from Missouri, and Pam and Richard from Wisconsin.

We have eaten many interesting foods.  One meat tonight was cassoulet of suckling pig and...

Boiled prime cuts of Ox.

Add some salmon, a few Brussel spouts, some beans, and a little rice and you have a full meal.

We took a walk along the Rhine River after dinner and saw a Viking River cruise boat.

Auf Wiedersehen!
