Berlin

Day 2: Berlin We woke up after a restful nights sleep at the Crown Plaza.  We loaded the bus and toured Berlin in the morning. A portion of the Holocaust Memorial with the American Embassy in the background.  The 2,711 cement boxes are in memory of all the Jews who lost their lives. Eastern and Western sides of the Berlin Wall The Gustapo Headquarters are below the glass on the bottom of the right-hand picture. We visited the Brandenburg Gate and the bomb-damaged tower of Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. After enjoying Currywurst/Pommes/.5 L Bier for our lunch, we continued on the tour bus to Juterbog.    It was here we visited St. Nikolai Church (notice the two distinct spires) that housed a coffer that dates back to when the church sold indulgences.  This was no small collection box as you can see in the picture.   We're now spending two nights in Dessau and from here we travel to Wittenberg tomo...

At the Airport

Image
Gina and James got us to the airport on time!  At MSP before take-off.  Denise had to have one more bowl of the Wild Rice Soup before we left Minnesota. Ready for take-off since we know we're "safe & secure" in God's arms   .  Beautiful skies leaving Minnesota and USA.  Flew over Canada, the Atlantic Ocean, Scotland, and England before landing in Paris. Breakfast box on October 29, 2017. Sunrise on October 29, 2017. Transferring in Paris.  We had to visit the Border Police.  Thankful we both passed. Leaving Paris.  Foggy.  The grass is still very green and a mix of clover. Bye-Bye Paris.  We had a great two hour visit at the very busy Charles De Gaulle airport. Preparing to land in Berlin! . We met a new friend from Las Vegas who will be on the tour with us.  She is 83 years young and until she met up with us at the Berlin airport had travelled from Las Vegas...

The Weekend Before

Image
Pre-Germany trip to Wisconsin Sarah and I took a road trip to Wisconsin.  She visited her sister Hannah and was joined by two other sisters, Lisa and Rachel. Now, I just need to meet Becci. I visited my mom and had a wonderful time.  Sunset as we returned to Minnesota on Highway 8 ...and on my way home from work on highway 14  on October 24, 2017.  We need to remember the beautiful fall sunsets in Minnesota so we have a reason to return.

The Countdown Begins

Image
Seven days and counting! One week from today, we will be flying over the Atlantic to Paris but only spending a few hours in Paris before we head to Berlin! Working on adding pictures....hmmm...   The Sixel Cheese Factory.  Trying to determine if the owners were related.  Otto Sixel The Weather Vane- oh the winds of change. What will Germany bring me as my fore-fathers brought the German traditions in the past to America.   Love the cream-colored brick. Looking at the prairie grass and wildflowers in fall. Looking at the No Mow grass on the mounds.  Supposably, no mowing, no fertilizer and grows 4-5 inches tall.  Another picture of the No-Mow grass with a peek of Lake Michigan in the background.  Very windy with some foot-high white caps.
